Critical Illness Insurance

Critical Illness Insurance

Overview

Being sick is no fun. And if it’s a major illness, it can have a major impact on life as you know it – emotionally, physically and financially. Critical Illness insurance can assist in making it all a lot easier. And while your health insurance will help cover medical expenses, it’s not going to help with those other household bills. Unfortunately, those don’t stop just because you’re ill. Critical Illness insurance can help.

Tell Me More

Critical Illness insurance pays you a lump sum cash benefit when a covered illness is diagnosed. You choose the amount of coverage available at the time of enrollment. When you or a covered dependent are diagnosed with a covered illness while insured under the policy, a benefit is paid. You can use this payment in any way you choose, including:

  • Expenses not covered by your medical insurance such as deductibles and coinsurance, caregiver expenses, travel to and from treatment centers, rehabilitation
  • Day-to-day living expenses such as rent or mortgage payments, groceries, child care, and utility bills

Who is eligible?

  • You are eligible for this insurance if you are an active full-time employee who works at least 20 hours per week on a regularly scheduled basis.
  • Your spouse and child(ren) are also eligible for coverage. Any child(ren) must be under age 26.

Can I insure my domestic or civil union partner?

  • Yes. Any reference to “spouse” includes your domestic partner, civil union partner or equivalent, as recognized and allowed by applicable law.

FAQs

Answers about the plan, including eligibility, options, enrollment, customer service and more.

  • Who is the provider?

The Hartford is a leader in property and casualty insurance, group benefits and mutual funds. With more than 200 years of expertise, The Hartford is widely recognized for its service excellence, sustainability practices, trust and integrity.
  • What is Critical Illness insurance?

We’ll help you prepare for the unexpected. The Hartford partners with your employer to offer you voluntary benefits – what we call “voluntary insurance coverages.” Think of our plans as a safety net, ready to help you in tough times, like if you become sick. You can choose what you want by selecting the benefits that are right for your needs. And you’ll likely pay less than usual because you’re buying them through your employer’s group plan.

With Critical Illness insurance, you’ll receive a lump sum payment when a covered illness is diagnosed. You can use this payment in any way you choose, including expenses not covered by your medical insurance or day-to-day living expenses such as:

    • deductibles and coinsurance
    • caregiver expenses
    • travel to and from treatment centers
    • rent or mortgage payments
    • groceries
    • child care
  • Why do I need it?

A major illness, such as cancer, a heart attack or stroke, can leave you emotionally, physically and financially overwhelmed. Critical Illness insurance can help:

    • Relieve the financial impact of an illness so you can focus on recovery
    • Enhance your traditional medical plan
    • Ensure that you’ll be better prepared to cover out-of-pocket expenses in the event of a serious illness when combined with Accident or Disability insurance
  • When can I enroll?

You may enroll during any scheduled enrollment period, or within 31 days of the completion of any eligibility waiting period established by your employer.
  • When does this insurance begin?

Insurance will become effective in accordance with the terms of the certificate (usually the first day of the month following the date you elect coverage).

You must be actively at work with your employer on the day your coverage takes effect. Your spouse and child(ren) must be performing normal activities and not be confined (at home or in a hospital/care facility), unless already insured with the prior carrier.

  • When does this insurance end?

This insurance will end when you or your dependent(s) no longer satisfy the applicable eligibility conditions, premium is unpaid, you are no longer actively working, you leave your employer, or the coverage is no longer offered.
  • Can I keep this insurance if I leave my employer or am no longer a member of this group?

Yes, you can take this coverage with you. Coverage may be continued for you and your dependent(s) under a group portability policy.

Your spouse may also continue insurance in certain circumstances. The specific terms and qualifying events for portability are described in the certificate.
