Accident Insurance

Accident Insurance

Overview

An accident can always ruin a good time. If it does, your health insurance will help cover doctors’ costs and medical treatments. What it doesn’t cover is on you. This is when Accident insurance kicks in. The valuable layer of protection from Accident insurance can reduce the costs and inconveniences of a mishap. It could make a huge difference when your family needs it most. Get covered today, and rest easy tomorrow.

Tell Me More

Accident insurance pays you a lump sum cash benefit to help cover your out-of-pocket expenses so you can focus more on getting well and less on the extra expenses an accident can bring. Plus, getting coverage is easy and affordable with:

  • Guaranteed Acceptance coverage; no health questions asked
  • Easy payroll deduction of premiums (that’ll never increase due to your age)
  • Benefits available for your spouse and dependent child(ren)
  • Direct payment to you or your beneficiary
  • Coverage portability. If you change jobs, you can take coverage with you

Both of the Accident insurance plan options available to you also pay an additional 25%, up to $2,000 per year, for a covered accident incurred while playing in an organized amateur sport activity with formal registration (such as with a town soccer team, work softball league, or church sponsored basketball league).

Who is eligible?

  • You are eligible for this insurance if you are an active full-time employee who works at least 20 hours per week on a regularly scheduled basis.
  • Your spouse and child(ren) are also eligible for coverage. Any child(ren) must be under age 26.

Can I insure my domestic or civil union partner?

  • Yes. Any reference to “spouse” includes your domestic partner, civil union partner or equivalent, as recognized and allowed by applicable law.

FAQs

Answers about the plan, including eligibility, options, enrollment, customer service and more.

  • Who is the provider?

The Hartford is a leader in property and casualty insurance, group benefits and mutual funds. With more than 200 years of expertise, The Hartford is widely recognized for its service excellence, sustainability practices, trust and integrity.
  • What is Accident insurance?

With Accident insurance, you’ll receive a cash benefit for each covered injury and related services. You can use the payment in any way you choose, from expenses not covered by your major medical plan to day-to-day costs of living such as your mortgage or utility bills.

Life has its ups and downs, and you never know when you’ll need extra support. That’s why The Hartford partners with your employer to offer you voluntary benefits – what we call “voluntary insurance coverages.” Think of our plans as a safety net, ready to help you in tough times, like if you become sick or get into a bad accident.

You can choose what you want by selecting the benefits that are right for your needs. And you’ll likely pay less than usual because you’re buying them through your employer’s group plan.

  • Why do I need it?

    • Out of pocket expenses add up quickly, since major medical insurance may only pick up part of the tab.
    • Help ease the unplanned financial burden of an accident.
    • Complements other insurance you may have, including major medical and disability coverage.
    • Additional layer of financial protection.
  • When can I enroll?

You may enroll during any scheduled enrollment period, or within 31 days of the completion of any eligibility waiting period established by your employer.
  • Am I guaranteed coverage?

This insurance is guaranteed issue coverage – it is available without having to provide information about your or your family’s health. All you have to do is elect the coverage to become insured.
  • When does this insurance begin?

Insurance will become effective in accordance with the terms of the certificate (usually the first day of the month following the date you elect coverage).

You must be actively at work with your employer on the day your coverage takes effect. Your spouse and child(ren) must be performing normal activities and not be confined (at home or in a hospital/care facility), unless already insured with the prior carrier.

  • When does this insurance end?

This insurance will end when you or your dependent(s) no longer satisfy the applicable eligibility conditions, premium is unpaid, you are no longer actively working, you leave your employer, or the coverage is no longer offered.
  • Can I keep this insurance if I leave my employer or am no longer a member of this group?

Yes, you can take this coverage with you. Coverage may be continued for you and your dependent(s) under a group portability policy. Your spouse may also continue insurance in certain circumstances. The specific terms and qualifying events for portability are described in the certificate.
